In old Slovenian language, March is called sušec- dry month. It is one of the most positive months of the year: the winter is already very weak, here and there some colder days; however, sun is already high enough to embrace us with some gentle sunbeams.

First celebration of the months is devoted to women- in old communist days as well as today- women celebrated March 8, an International day of women's rights, men as a contrary celebrate March 10 as martyrs day and at the end of the month, March 25, religious people celebrate Mother's day.

On the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovenia is nowadays once very popular, than forgotten, lately revealing again so-called St Gregory's day- March 12. In an old calendar March 12 was the first day of Spring- the season, which brought longer days, more light and warmth. In our culture it is considered, that St Gregory’s day is the day of love. Quite often, you are going to hear, that on March 12 birds get married.

Old saying is revealing to us, that St Gregory threw the lamp in the water. He wanted to tell artisans, that the light would not be needed anymore in their workshops.

On eve of St Gregory's day, the arrival of spring is celebrated. At dusk people, young and already more experienced put their home, handmade little boats with little candles in the water. The boats are usually made of environmentally friendly material like paper, cardboard or wood. The candles lit the construction, so it looks very romantic. The stream of water take little constructions away with their flow and prove to the locals that lights will not be needed any more, since the days are going to be longer.

To see how the locals celebrate this evening, we would like to invite you to come with us on a walking tour to a place well kept by locals- in Trnovo and Krakovo in Ljubljana. At night is very vivid and joyful along the stream Gradaščica. Do you fancy a short tour by car to some close little towns like Radovljica, Škofja Loka or Kropa, where can be seen how the warmth and light were welcomed by the iron forgers? No problem, just contact us and we are going to prepare an unforgettable experience for you!
