One of the most arcaic languages in the world

Have you heard of dual? Most probably, in your language, you use singular and plural only. Well, our mother tongue is exceptional: between one and two or more, we put another form, which we call dual.

Slovenian language is a Slavic language. In Europe, there are many Slavs living: West, East and South. Slavic languages are similar, same as Germanic or Latin based languages. However, Slovenian language is the only official language that still today uses a grammatical form dual. The dual number existed in proto Indo European Languages. Today dual form is still in use in some languages like Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Lithuanian…and out of Europe in Arabic language. In Slovenian language dual is mandatory and it makes our mother tongue very unique.

We are very proud of our dual: this is the form that brings a human being from loneliness to community. This is the number that keeps the intimacy of a couple and makes a new life- the formation of a family – the basic part of every community. Yes, we are romantic and we can be: love is built in our country’s name, remember: S-LOVE-NIA?

Slovenian language is not spoken in Slovenia only. In our neighboring countries, we have minorities who keep the language sometimes even more pristine than we in Slovenia. In Austria, there is a region called Carinthia. Peter Handke’s mum was from there. He nicely interpreted some of Slovenian words, when he received his Nobel prize for literature in 2019. In Hungary, Croatia and in Italy we also have Slovenian minority. Boris Pahor, the oldest living survivor of Nazi concentration camp and writer of famous Necropolis, lives in Trieste and writes his works in Slovenian. Next to neighboring countries Slovenian language is still spoken in USA, “our capital” Cleveland Ohio, in Argentina or even in Australia, where some of the Slovenians around 100 years ago found their new home.
