Cobblers are at home in Slovenia

Seeing an artisan cobbler at work is a very rare moment. Most of the shoes today are a product of a mass production, a product with no soul.

Once upon a long ago, it was much different. My grandfather was a cobbler, a master of the profession. As a young girl, I remember watching him making a new pair of shoes. For him, everything was important step, starting with a moment of choosing a leather for shoes. He was even thinking about the personality of the person who would be wearing them!

Slovenia generally has a long tradition in making shoes. One of the main Slovenian businessperson was Peter Kozina, who established a prominent brand name PEKO. Peko, today in a modern Slovenia, is trying again to find its place in the competitive world. Everything started in a little town Tržič. A private, off the beaten path tour will bring you 100 yrs. back - not just in cobbler's tradition, but also in the tradition of forging, geology, food and much more!

However, if you would like to watch a shoemaker repairing or making new, artisanal shoes by hand, you do need to leave our capital Ljubljana. Next to a famous cobbler's bridge there is an old shoemaker's workshop. Here you can still today see a senior cobbler practicing his craft.

The cobbler's shop is (as it usually was) very small, the workbench occupies very little space. If you would like to experience this unique artisan workshop and a mature skilled man repairing or making shoes, join us on our custom made private guided city tour. Close to the piles of leather, the pitch, the nails, the resin and the other innumerable utensils will be admired our master artisan, who made and is still making numerous exclusive models.
