Ljubljana was shortlisted alongside – Essen, Nijmegen, Oslo and Umeå. Each city was shortlisted for the award in its own unique way and the Jury had a tough challenge in selecting an overall winner from such a high standard of applicants.
Today more than two thirds of Europeans live in towns and cities. Urban areas concentrate most of the environmental challenges facing our society but also bring together commitment and innovation to resolve them.
The cities were recognised for their projects which addressed the conference theme of 'energising cities – energy intelligent cities', in three categories cooperation, innovation and participation.
